We are engaging students to make sustainable choices

my world, my choice! is an educational program to teach students about sustainability and challenge them to grow as leaders in their schools & communities.

Students are taught about sustainability through classroom activities, interaction and exercises. We encourage further learning through running 'simulation days' where students spend the day working through activities that enforce the fundamental concepts of sustainability, that our actions are tied together the world over.

After the students have finished their instruction, they will use their knowledge on a real-life application of how sustainability can benefit the world around them - their school. Over several weeks students will work on creating and developing their own solutions that will benefit their schools, some examples include:

  • community gardens
  • paper and waste management
  • improved use of their school facility
  • real cafeteria lunches

We have seen many insightful and inspiring ideas result from these projects, and challenged many students to become the forward thinking leaders of their generation.

What is sustainability and why is it important?

Sustainability is a word that is used a lot these days. Simply put, sustainability means 'enough for all, forever'. A more thorough definition:

Sustainability enables us to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. We measure our actions through the well-being of interacting economic, environmental and social systems.

We want students to know that the choices they make have a lasting impact on our world. Understanding that the environmental and economic well being of our planet are tied together through the choices our society makes every day is the first step to making the right choices to move forward.
